The West Steps

Why some children are criminalized, and some forgiven

March 07, 2019 Colorado Children's Campaign Season 1 Episode 8
The West Steps
Why some children are criminalized, and some forgiven
Show Notes

Educators and child behavior expert, Dr. Rosemarie Allen, joins us this week to explore the racial disparities in decisions to remove young children from school. Young black children and boys are much more likely to be suspended and expelled for similar behaviors as their peers. Dr. Allen shares her years of research—rooted in her own experience of being pushed out of school repeatedly at a young age. A bill before Colorado legislators would ensure young children are able to stay in the classroom, and help educators get more support to serve every child in the classroom.
